Looking at The World Thru a Windshield

That was me for over 20 years, “Looking at The World Thru A Windshield, Watching It Fly By Me On The Right.”

Looking at the World thru a windshield, trying to figure out where, or if, I’ll sleep Tonight.

The song “Looking at The World Thru A Windshield” was written by Jerry Chesnut and Mike Hoyer. And  Del Reeves did the first recording. And it was released in 1968, and by the early 70’s every Truck-Driver new the Words.

Here is Del Reeves’ singing “Looking at The World Thru A Windshield”. Listen to the words and you will begin to understand the Life of a Truck Driver. After a while I ended up adopting a new second line to the Chorus. And it is written above.

As you read thru this page you will begin to Understand the life of a Truck Driver.

Looking at The World Thru A Windshield

Truck driving has taken me to all of the lower 48 States and all of the Southern Provinces of Canada. And with almost 3 million verifiable miles, I was involved in almost no Major Accidents. I say almost for a reason, while driving on a 2-lane U.S. Highway at about 1:00 A.M. A vehicle on the right shoulder decided to pull of the shoulder and make a U-turn right. When I left the shipper I scaled at 79,400lbs. You cannot stop that much weight in a short distance. And yes there other close calls as well.

Anyway, back to the life of a Truck Driver who spent 20+ years “Looking at the World Thru A Windshield”, Weather.

If you look close at the Picture you can see my wife looking out of the passenger side windshield. It snowed for four days. And it took two more days to get all the accidents cleared. There where those Truck Drivers that tried to leave the Truck Stop. And within the next 12 to 14 hours most were towed back. None had gotten more than two or three miles. The rest chose to stay where they got stuck. That is the choice you make on a $500.00 load, and the Tow Bill is $400.00. Especially if you have already spent $300.00 or more on fuel.

Getting Delayed at Shippers and Receivers, This is not fun.

Have you ever had an appointment at 6:00 A.M. and then been forced to sit there until 6:00 P.M. Now you have to be between 300 and 400 miles away by 6:00 A.M. the following Morning. That is when you really need some Driving Music and lots of Coffee. And when I talk about Driving Music. That means songs like The Charlie Daniel Band and “Passing Lane”, or maybe “Drinking My Baby Goodbye”. Then of course there is always Lynyrd Skynyrd and “Call Me The Breeze”. There are just so many great Driving Songs. And I am Sure that you have Your List as well. Because of all the night driving, I saw very little scenery.
